ACNE VS. THE SUN —

ever notice how the sun has a way of making acne disappear? sun exposure can sometimes improve acne temporarily due to several factors—

the drying effect: sun dries out our skin, which reduces the oiliness that contributes to acne

vitamin d: sunlight helps our body produce vitamin D, which has anti-inflammatory properties that help with acne

tanning: a tan temporarily masks the redness associated with acne, making it appear less severe

all of that said, relying on sun exposure to treat your acne treatment means swapping out a curable skin issue for one that is permanent and potentially deadly. sun exposure damages the dermis in a myriad of ways from wrinkles, fine lines, dehydration, photosensitivity and sun spots to skin cancer. using tanning as a means to dry up break outs can also cause mottled discoloured skin where the acne scarring was present, which requires deeper treatments to reverse.
